3Understanding Homeowner’s Insurance and Musical Instruments

    Standard Coverage Limits:

Typically, homeowner’s insurance policies provide coverage for musical instruments up to a certain limit, commonly $2,000. If your instrument’s value exceeds this limit, it’s wise to consider a specialized Musical Instrument Insurance policy. For more details on policy valuation, please refer to the section below.

    Exclusions in Standard Policies:

It’s important to note that instruments used in paid performances are often excluded from standard homeowner’s policies, as this is deemed business use. In the event of a loss during a paid performance, you may find that your standard policy offers no coverage. Always consult your insurance agent to get written confirmation of coverage for “Pay for Play” scenarios.. Unlike standard policies, Anderson’s Musical Instrument Insurance provides comprehensive coverage for casual, professional, and business use of your instruments.

    Flood Damage:

Are you aware that standard homeowner’s policies do not cover flood damage? Without a separate flood insurance policy for personal property, your instruments are unprotected. However, Musical Instrument Insurance specifically includes coverage for flood damage to your listed instruments.

    Earthquake Damage:

Similarly, damage from earthquakes is typically not covered under homeowner’s policies, which extends to musical instruments as well.

    Additional Perils Covered:

Musical Instrument Insurance offers protection against many risks not covered by homeowner’s policies, such as accidental falls or cracks. While each claim is assessed by an adjuster to verify coverage, homeowner’s policies generally do not compensate for instrument damage caused by accidents like bumps or drops. These perils are not included in standard homeowner’s policies. (For detailed coverage information, please request a copy of the Custom Crafted Anderson Musical Instrument Signature Policy.)

    Flexible Deductibles:

Our policy features deductibles starting as low as $0, with an average of $100. For string bass instruments, the deductible for “all perils” is set at $500.00. This contrasts with homeowner’s policies, which may have deductibles of $1,000 or more.

Stated Value vs. Actual Cash Value:

Our insurance provides stated value coverage for your instrument, ensuring full protection of its appraised value. In contrast, a standard homeowner’s policy may only offer Actual Cash Value (Replacement Cost minus Depreciation). Given that well-maintained musical instruments typically experience minimal depreciation, this distinction is crucial to discuss with your agent to avoid any unpleasant surprises.

    Impact on Personal Property Coverage:

Consider whether the total value of your musical instruments reduces the Personal Property (Coverage C) portion of your homeowner’s policy. Remember, this coverage is intended to replace everything from linens to appliances. Allocating part of it to replace musical instruments could diminish the coverage you need for other personal property.

4How do I make changes to my policy?
To add new items, please email service@anderson-group.com, include the year (or circa year built) make, model and serial # along with the requested insurance value for each item. In addition, please attach a copy of your bill of sale or other proof of ownership AND photographs (front and back) for each instrument. To delete item(s), please email service@anderson-group.com and let us know the item(s) that you wish to remove and the requested removal date. (Changes are typically processed in one to two business days).
5Where do I mail requests for customer service, premium payments, and correspondence?

  • A copy of your agreement between you and your renter. (We require that you hold your renter responsible for the first $500 (or more) of damage in writing.)

  • Provide a brief background of your renter’s background and experience handling (and caring) for any instrument that you want to rent to others.
  • Please let us know the extent that this instrument will be away from your renters’ premises, along with your renter’s experience transporting this instrument.
  • If your rental instrument is left away from the renters’ premises, describe how this instrument will be protected when it is not being played or is unattended.
10Insurable Interest: What is this and how do I prove that I have an insurable interest?

Establishing Ownership & Insurable Interest

Before we can issue a policy, we need reasonable confirmation that you have an insurable interest in the instrument—essentially, that you own it or have a financial stake in it. This helps ensure coverage is valid and protects all policyholders from unnecessary risk.

In most cases, we simply ask applicants to certify ownership or permitted use during the quote process. Formal documentation is rarely required, but when needed, acceptable forms include:

  • Bill of sale or appraisal in your name
  • Affidavit of ownership
  • Legal documents for inherited or gifted items
  • Any other reasonable proof of provenance

Occasionally, we may request additional documentation for instruments with unusually high valuations or complex histories. This helps us maintain fair and accurate coverage for everyone.

For full policy language, please refer to our Coverage Form. If you have questions or need guidance, we’re always here to help.

11Anderson Email is not making it past my SPAM filter. What can I do?

We rely on email delivery for 99% of our communications and policy deliveries. In the chance that you have not received a quote or your policy renewal or invoice, please refer to your SPAM or JUNK MAIL filter to see if there are any emails from service@anderson-group.com.

If mail from us has been snagged by your spam or junk mail filter, please add service@anderson-group.com and sales@anderson-group,com to your contacts. This will guarantee an orderly flow of email from our office to your email.

12What is the difference between replacement cost, stated value, and other policy valuation types?

We get this question a lot—and for good reason. Understanding how your coverage is structured is one of the most important ways to distinguish Anderson from the competition. Here's a clear breakdown of the coverage types we offer and how they compare to standard industry practices.

Actual Cash Value (ACV):

Actual Cash Value coverage is something we recommend avoiding whenever possible. Commonly found in homeowners and commercial property policies, ACV clauses can result in a depreciated settlement if your instrument is insured for less than 80%, 90%, or even 100% of its replacement cost. The industry-standard definition of ACV is:

The cost to replace your instrument with a new one of similar kind and quality, minus depreciation.

In practice, this means that if your instrument’s insured value isn’t kept current—typically between 80% and 100% of its replacement cost—you could receive significantly less than expected in the event of a claim. The good news: most musical instrument policies, including those issued by Anderson Musical Instrument Insurance Solutions, LLC, do not include ACV clauses.

Replacement Cost:

Replacement Cost coverage pays the full cost to replace your instrument with a new one of similar kind and quality, without deducting for depreciation. While this is a step up from ACV, it still requires ongoing valuation updates to ensure adequate coverage.

Stated Value:

With Stated Value coverage, you and the insurance company agree in advance on the value of your instrument(s) and accessories. In the event of a covered loss, the insurer will pay up to the stated amount—whether for repairs or full replacement due to theft, loss, or irreparable damage.

How is the stated value determined? For instruments currently in production, we typically accept the current-year replacement cost. For others, we may request an appraisal. Either way, we’ll let you know upfront if an appraisal is needed. In fact, 100% of our policies utilize the Stated Value clause—because it offers clarity, fairness, and peace of mind.

Diminished Value:

Our Signature Musical Instrument Coverage Form also includes protection against diminished value. If your instrument suffers a covered loss that reduces its market value—even after repairs—we’ll cover that reduction, up to the stated value limit.

For full details, please refer to your policy documents. And if you have questions about these coverage types or how Anderson sets itself apart, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re here to help.

13Why do we charge a policy fee for our instrument insurance programs?

Most insurance agencies earn revenue through commissions from the insurance company, based on a percentage of your premium. Because our rates are intentionally low, those commissions alone don’t fully cover the cost of servicing your policy—including payroll and administrative support.

To avoid raising premiums across the board, we’ve implemented a modest $25 annual policy fee more than 20 years ago. This fee helps us maintain the high level of service you expect—without compromising affordability.

In fact, when compared to other agencies offering musical instrument insurance, our total cost (minimum premium + policy fee) remains significantly lower. Fees like this have become standard across both insurance and other service-based industries. But in our case, it’s designed to protect your bottom line.

Don’t just take our word for it—ask your colleagues or reach out to us directly. We’re happy to share information about other agencies so you can compare for yourself.

14What is our credit card “return” policy?

Policy Cancellation and Refund Terms

You may cancel your policy and receive a full refund of your premium—excluding the policy fee, which is always considered fully earned—by notifying us in writing within 30 days of receiving your certificate declarations page.

If you choose to cancel your policy after the initial 30-day period, you will receive a pro rata refund of the unused, unearned premium. Simply notify us in writing to initiate the cancellation process.

Once your cancellation request is received and approved, we will issue your refund within five business days. Refunds are processed either by mailing a check to your most recent insured address on file or, if applicable, by issuing a credit to the card we have on record.

15When can I expect a refund on any unearned premium, if any, if my coverage is cancelled by me?
We will calculate a “return premium” based on the number of days to your normal policy expiration date. We will refund and mail our check for any credit balances greater than $25.00 within 30 days of the date your policy cancels to the latest address that we have on file. (Your annual policy fee is fully earned on the inception date of your policy and is non-refundable).
16Why do we require “cookies” on our Secure Make A Payment page on our website?
We decided many years ago to utilize a secure payment service provider along with an “SSL EV” Extended Validation Certificate offering assurance to our clients that you are truly on our website. This EV SSL technology is a totally secure option to display a payment page that safely and securely handles your credit card transaction details. EV SSL technology requires the use of cookies. There is nothing we can do to disable this. But the use of cookies is purely for technical, and ironically, security reasons. It is not done to enable tracking of users for the purposes of ad targeting or anything else.
