Updating Your Harp Values for Harps Less Than Thirty Years Old
Appraisals are never required for harps under thirty years old. However, we recommend confirming your harp’s value annually with the manufacturer—information is often available on their website.
Coverage Requirements for Harps Over Thirty Years Old or No Longer Manufactured
- A CONDITION appraisal from a credentialed harp maker, appraiser, or repair technician is required. It must note the condition and current market value of the harp. Market value is defined as the price agreed upon by a willing buyer and seller. Even fully restored older harps typically do not command prices comparable to newly manufactured models.
- A copy of your bill of sale and any receipts for prior restorations is requested (unless waived by underwriting).
- We advise against insuring an older harp for more than its realistic resale value. Insurance is designed to reflect market value—not to create excess coverage that may never be used.
🔍 Additional Coverage Details
🚗 Theft from Unlocked Vehicle Exclusion
If your instrument is stored in a vehicle, that vehicle must be locked at all times. Coverage for theft, pilferage, burglary, or robbery is only provided when there are visible signs of forced entry on the vehicle’s exterior or lock.
🛡️ Terrorism Coverage
Coverage for terrorism-related losses is extended under the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act (TRIA)—at no additional charge.
💻 Electronic Equipment & Software
Electronic equipment and software may be added at $0.72 per $100 USD of insured value. This includes audio tools, VST/VSTi plugins, and synch licenses using virtual or hardware dongles. This charge is in addition to your instrument and accessory premium.
🎻 Rental Reimbursement Coverage
Included at no additional charge for covered members of the American Harp Society in good standing. Provides up to $225/month for 12 months following a covered loss—if you do not have an equivalent idle instrument available during repair.

⚠️ Why Homeowner’s Insurance Falls Short for Harp Protection
- 💸 Limited Coverage: Most homeowner’s policies cap musical instrument coverage at $2,000—far below the value of most harps.
- 🚫 No Business Use: Instruments used in paid performances are often excluded. That’s considered “business use,” and claims may be denied. Anderson Harp Insurance covers casual, professional, and business use—no exceptions.
- 🌊 No Flood Protection: Unless you carry a separate flood policy, homeowner’s insurance won’t cover water damage. We include flood coverage for listed instruments.
- 🌍 No Earthquake Coverage: Earthquake damage is typically excluded—especially for musical instruments.
- 💥 No Impact Coverage: Homeowner’s policies rarely cover breakage from bumping, dropping, or tipping. We do. View our full Harp Policy here.
- 💰 Deductible Differences: Our policies offer deductibles as low as $250. Homeowner’s policies often start at $1,000+.
- 📏 Valuation Matters: We insure harps at Agreed Value. Homeowner’s policies typically use Actual Cash Value (replacement cost minus depreciation)—a major gap for high-quality instruments.
- 📦 Coverage C Conflict: Including your harp under Personal Property (Coverage C) may reduce protection for other essentials like furniture, appliances, and electronics.
